The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) is an international leader in the field of Semantics and Web Service technologies research. DERI has founded main institutions at the National University Ireland, Galway and the Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck, Austria - as well as establishing joint study and exchange programs with Stanford University, USA and Seoul National University, Korea. Currently DERI is comprised of both professional and academic research partners from around the world.
Our major objective is to establish Semantic technologies as a core pillar of modern Computer Science, thereby providing interoperability and scalability for Semantically Enabled Service Orientated Architectures. DERI Innsbruck is currently seeking candidates for the following positions:
Software Developers
Position Summary
- The primary objective of this position is to provide programming support and assistance in ongoing and future DERI implementation projects.
- While you will be required to work in cooperation with individual DERI and external researchers, the scope of your principal implementation tasks will focus on optimizing and further developing DERI tools and applications.
- The candidate must be detail oriented and intensely focused, yet maintain flexibility and the ability to express his/her formulated objective view.
- While general supervision for project direction is provided either by the project leader or manager, the individual must exercise his/her own judgment within loosely defined parameters in a dynamic environment.
- Due to our international environment, excellent communication skills and fluency in both written and spoken English will be required on a daily basis.
Tasks
- Implement and further develop current software projects.
- Provide technical documentation, deliverables, and directives.
- Evaluate current software development status.
- Provide structured software development framework (e.g. development roadmap).
- Provide technical feedback to research and development teams in order to collaboratively improve their skills, abilities and knowledge.
- Participate in EU and Austrian funded scientific research projects.
- Basic project management responsibilities may also be required, such as project plan maintenance.
- Limited travel may be required.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or 2-year degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or equivalent practical work experience.
- Previous implementation and/or development experience.
- Proven ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- The applicant should be creative and enthusiastic, with excellent communication skills.
- Desired technical experience/training:
- Minimum 3-5 years Java experience
- Strong background in Java architecture, design, and main APIs
- Strong background in front- and backend Web applications
- Experience with Eclipse, particularly with CVS & team programming projects
- Semantic and Web Service technologies
- XML, OWL, RDF
- Ontology Engineering
- Familiarity with WSMO/WSML/WSMX

Post-Docs and Senior Researchers
DERI Innsbruck and DERI Galway are the leading research groups in the area of Semantic Web technologies with excellent ties to key relevant research groups worldwide.
We expect
- An excellent PhD degree, or equivalent academic degree, in Computer Science or related disciplines. Candidates with a PhD degree in Business Information
Systems will also be considered.
- Research interests in Logic, Ontology Languages, Semantic Web Services, Semantics in Business Information Systems, or related Semantic Web topics
- The willingness to combine formal scientific work with application-oriented research in projects funded by the European Commission and national agencies
We are looking for individuals who will be able to continue their existing field of research within our ongoing and new research projects. The senior positions will also include management responsibility for a research cluster of 3 – 6 junior researchers.
