The two secondary school teachers, Francis Fahy from Gurbally College, Ballinasloe and Niamh Tyrrell from Community College Gort, are taking part in Science Foundation Ireland's STAR (Secondary Teacher Research Assistant) programme. Both teachers will spend the next two months slaving away at a computer screen, while their students are enjoying their holidays, typing furiously to assist on a new intelligent internet business software development. "They'll have a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of the latest internet technologies over the summer, and then bring their new skills and experiences back to the class room. Hopefully our combined efforts will encourage the next generation of young Irish scientists and technologists, adds Professor Bussler" According to Francis, "This STAR programme allows me a fantastic opportunity to purse my interest in software development and then bring the skills I learn directly back to my students who are interested in computers and computer programming." Likewise for Niamh "This will be great for those students who already have an interest and aptitude for computers and programming, but it could also do wonders to energise those who up to now haven't been quite so interested. There's also the possibility to involve the business and commerce teachers in the school." While at DERI the teachers will participate in real scientific projects and contribute to the academic output of the Institute. It's hoped that their classroom skills might teach the researchers a thing or two as well. On Friday June 17th, Minister Eamon O Cuiv launched a remarkable Community Outreach programme at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), NUI Galway. The Online Social Network Programme is using the latest groundbreaking research in Internet technology to drive new ways of social inclusion and participation, in particular amongst community and marginal groupings. The "pilot programme" aims to enable participants to maximise the communications potential of the Internet. It has included a series of Internet training for different groups as well as the application of the latest "smart" internet technology - the Semantic Web. The groups participating have come from across the spectrum of cosmopolitan Galway life including refugees, senior citizens, schools, residents associations and arts groups as well as the Brazilian community from Gort. Minister Eamon O Cuiv praised the pioneering work of DERI in its efforts to give a 21st century electronic perspective to the terms "community" and "village". A cross-community training programme for refugees and asylum seekers is part of an initiative taken by the university's Digital Enterprise Research Institute. Active retirement and other community groups may also be able to use the programme's recycled computers. The initiative has changed the lives of graduates such as Tess Kadesa from Kenya, Emma Chuwa from South Africa and Maria Fatima from Angola. All three live with other refugees and asylum seekers at the Eglinton Hotel, Salthill, and experienced extreme isolation and loneliness on arriving in Ireland. The six-month programme with the research institute helped them to develop their computer skills and to establish their own websites. "Some of us had never talked to each other before, but this has allowed us to communicate with each other, with family back home, to draw down information and to feel a part of society," Ms Kadesa and Ms Chuwa told The Irish Times. Ms Fatima will now be working with institute staff to train members of the substantial Brazilian community in Gort, Co Galway. "It has been such a positive catalyst for change," said Brendan Walsh of the institute at an awards ceremony yesterday. "Part of the plan involved contacting Galway businesses and asking them to donate outdated computers which could be recycled for school and community use. We had an enormously positive response and as a result we have eight computers for asylum seekers at the Eglinton Hotel, which will be linked to broadband in the new year." The programme has been developed in partnership with the Galway Centre for Independent Living, which has provided the use of its own computer centre and transport for participants. An important facet of these services is that users manually annotate their photos using so called tags, which describe the contents of the photo or provide additional contextual and semantical information. In this paper we investigate how we can assist users in the tagging phase. The contribution of our research is twofold. We analyse a representative snapshot of Flickr and present the results by means of a tag characterisation focusing on how users tags photos and what information is contained in the tagging. Based on this analysis, we present and evaluate tag recommendation strategies to support the user in the photo annotation task by recommending a set of tags that can be added to the photo. The availability of interactive decision tools for consumers may lead to a transformation of the way in which shoppers search for product information and make purchase decisions. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the nature of the effects that interactive decision aids may have on consumer decision making in online shopping environments. This paper examines the effects of two decision aids on purchase decision making in an online store. The first interactive tool, a recommendation agent (RA), allows consumers to more efficiently screen the (potentially very large) set of alternatives available in an online shopping environment. Based on self-explicated information about a consumer's own utility function (attribute importance weights and minimum acceptable attribute levels), the RA generates a personalized list of recommended alternatives. The second decision aid, a comparison matrix (CM), is designed to help consumers&nbsp;make&nbsp;in-depth&nbsp;comparisons&nbsp;among&nbsp;selected&nbsp;alternatives. <br />Based on theoretical and empirical work in marketing, judgment and decision making, psychology, and decision support systems, we develop a set of hypotheses pertaining to the effects of these two decision aids on various aspects of consumer decision making In particular, we focus on how use of the RA and CM affects consumers' search for product information, the size and quality of their consideration sets, and the quality of their purchase decisions in an online shopping environment. We show that with the quadratically increasing complexity of verifying URL uniqueness, BFS crawl order, and fixed per-host rate-limiting, current crawling algorithms cannot effectively cope with the sheer volume of URLs generated in large crawls, highly-branching spam, legitimate multi-million-page blog sites, and infinite loops created by server-side scripts. We offer a set of techniques for dealing with these issues and test their performance in an implementation we call IRLbot. In our recent experiment that lasted 41 days, IRLbot running on a single server successfully crawled 6.3 billion valid HTML pages ($7.6$ billion connection requests) and sustained an average download rate of 319 mb/s (1,789 pages/s). The availability of such tools, which we refer to as interactive decision aims for consumers, may lead to a transformation of the way in which shoppers search for product information and make purchase decisions. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the nature of the effects that interactive decision aids may have on consumer decision making in online shopping environments. While making purchase decisions, consumers are often unable to evaluate all available alternatives in great depth and, thus, tend to use two-stage processes to reach their decisions. At the first stage, consumers typically screen a large set of available products and identify a subset of the most promising alternatives. Subsequently, they evaluate the latter in more depth, perform relative comparisons across products on important attributes, and make a purchase decision. Given the different tasks to be performed in such a two-stage process, interactive tools that provide support to consumers in the following respects are particularly valuable: (1) the initial screening of available products to determine which ones are worth considering further, and (2) the in-depth comparison of selected products before making the actual purchase decision. This paper examines the effects of two decision aids, each designed to assist consumers in performing one of the above tasks, on purchase decision making in an online store. The first interactive tool, a recommendation agent (RA), allows consumers to more efficiently screen the (potentially very large) set of alternatives available in an online shopping environment. Based on self-explicated information about a consumer's own utility function (attribute importance weights and minimum acceptable attribute levels), the RA generates a personalized list of recommended alternatives. The second decision aid, a comparison matrix (CM), is designed to help consumers make in-depth comparisons among selected alternatives. The CM allows consumers to organize attribute information about multiple products in an alternatives x attributes matrix and to have alternatives sorted by any attribute. Based on theoretical and empirical work in marketing, judgment and decision making, psychology, and decision support systems, we develop a set of hypotheses pertaining to the effects of these two decision aids on various aspects of consumer decision making In particular, rye focus on how use of the RA and CM affects consumers' search for product information, the size and quality of their consideration sets, and the quality of their purchase decisions in an online shopping environment. A controlled experiment using a simulated online store was conducted to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that both interactive decision aids have a substantial impact on consumer decision making. As predicted, use of the RA reduces consumers' search effort for product information, decreases the size but increases the quality of their consideration sets, and improves the quality of their purchase decisions. Use of the CM also leads to a decrease in the size but an increase in the quality of consumers' consideration sets, and has a favorable effect on some indicators of decision quality. Is this dependency modified by the type of time pressure? These questions are addressed in three experimental studies in which participants made inferences after having searched for information on a computerized information board. In Study 1, time pressure was induced indirectly by imposing opportunity costs of being slow, a form of time pressure that is common in daily life but that has rarely been examined in the literature. A simple lexicographic heuristic (LEX) achieved the best fit in predicting participants' inferences. Studies 2 and 3 induced high time pressure either indirectly by imposing opportunity costs in terms of time or directly by limiting the time for each choice. Regardless of how time pressure was induced, under high time pressure the inferences could be best predicted with LEX, whereas under low time pressure a weighted linear model that integrates all available information predicted the inferences best. The &quot;pay-as-you-go&quot; nature of RDF and the flexible pattern-matching capabilities of its query language SPARQL entail efficiency and scalability challenges for complex queries including long join paths. This paper presents the RDF-3X engine, an implementation of SPARQL that achieves excellent performance by pursuing a RISC-style architecture with a streamlined architecture and carefully designed, puristic data structures and operations. The salient points of RDF-3X are: 1) a generic solution for storing and indexing RDF triples that completely eliminates the need for physical-design tuning, 2) a powerful yet simple query processor that leverages fast merge joins to the largest possible extent, and 3) a query optimizer for choosing optimal join orders using a cost model based on statistical synopses for entire join paths. Current optical tags, such as barcodes, must be read within a short range and the codes occupy valuable physical space on products. We present a new low-cost optical design so that the tags can be shrunk to 3mm visible diameter, and unmodified ordinary cameras several meters away can be set up to decode the identity plus the relative distance and angle. The design exploits the bokeh effect of ordinary cameras lenses, which maps rays exiting from an out of focus scene point into a disk like blur on the camera sensor. This bokeh-code or Bokode is a barcode design with a simple lenslet over the pattern. We show that a code with 15&#956;m features can be read using an off-the-shelf camera from distances of up to 2 meters. We use intelligent binary coding to estimate the relative distance and angle to the camera, and show potential for applications in augmented reality and motion capture. Eventhough most of these measures appear very natural, their design often seems to be rather ad hoc, and the underlying assumptionson the notion of similarity are not made explicit. A more systematic characterization and validation of tag similarity interms of formal representations of knowledge is still lacking. Here we address this issue and analyze several measures oftag similarity: Each measure is computed on data from the social bookmarking system del.icio.us and a semantic grounding isprovided by mapping pairs of similar tags in the folksonomy to pairs of synsets in Wordnet, where we use validated measuresof semantic distance to characterize the semantic relation between the mapped tags. However, corporations change prices based on proprietary algorithms and hidden variables (e.g., the number of unsold seats on a fight). Is it possible to develop data mining techniques that will enable consumers to predict price changes under these conditions? This paper reports on a pilot study in the domain of airline ticket prices where we recorded over 12,000 price observations over a 41 day period. When trained on this data, Hamlet - our multi-strategy data mining algorithm - generated a predictive model that saved 341 simulated passengers $198,074 by advising them when to buy and when to postpone ticket purchases. Remarkably, a clairvoyant algorithm with complete knowledge of future prices could save at most $320,572 in our simulation, thus Hamlet's savings were 61.8% of optimal. The algorithm's savings of $198,074 represents an average savings of 23.8% for the 341 passengers for whom savings are possible. Overall, Hamlet saved 4.4% of the ticket price averaged over the entire set of 4,488 simulated passengers. Our pilot study suggests that mining of price data available over the web has the potential to save consumers substantial sums of money&nbsp;per&nbsp;annum. <br /> <br />This paper is an excellent example of how interesting research can be turned into practical and valuable business. These papers presented reasons and experimental evidence that showed that the major RDBMS vendors can be outperformed by 1--2 orders of magnitude by specialized engines in the data warehouse, stream processing,&nbsp;text,&nbsp;and&nbsp;scientific&nbsp;database&nbsp;markets. <br />Assuming that specialized engines dominate these markets over time, the current relational DBMS code lines will be left with the business data processing (OLTP) market and hybrid markets where more than one kind of capability is required. In this paper we show that current RDBMSs can be beaten by nearly two orders of magnitude in the OLTP market as well. The experimental evidence comes from comparing a new OLTP prototype, H-Store, which we have built at M.I.T. to a popular RDBMS&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;standard&nbsp;transactional&nbsp;benchmark,&nbsp;TPC-C. <br /> <br />We conclude that the current RDBMS code lines, while attempting to be a &quot;one size fits all&quot; solution, in fact, excel at nothing. RDF has been shown to be a generally successful framework within which to perform such data integration work. However, research has largely considered these independently. Research on networks of technical artifacts focuses on techniques like code analysis or mining project archives. Social network analysis has been used to capture information about relations among people. Yet, each type of information is often far more useful when combined, as when the ?goodness? of social networks is judged by the patterns of dependencies in the technical artifacts. To bring such information together, we have developed Tesseract, a socio-technical dependency browser that utilizes cross-linked displays to enable exploration of the myriad relationships between artifacts, developers, bugs, and communications. An interactive argumentative discussion usually consists of an initial proposition stated by a single creator, followed by supporting propositions or counter-propositions from other contributors. These propositions intrinsically externalize the contributors' sentiments and opinions, with the current Web 2.0 technologies enabling more and more their free expression. In the design of a super- peer network for file sharing, several issues have to be addressed: how client peers are related to super-peers, how super-peers locate files, how the load is balanced among the super-peers, and how the system deals with node failures. In this paper we introduce a self-organizing super-peer network architecture (SOSPNET) that solves these issues in a fully decentralized manner. SOSPNET maintains a super- peer network topology that reflects the semantic similarity of peers sharing content interests. Super-peers maintain semantic caches of pointers to files which are requested by peers with similar interests. Client peers, on the other hand, dynamically select super-peers offering the best search performance. We show how this simple approach can be em- ployed not only to optimize searching, but also to solve generally difficult problems encountered in P2P architectures such as load balancing and fault tolerance. We evaluate SOSPNET using a model of the semantic structure derived from the 8-month traces of two large file-sharing communi- ties. This paper gives an overview of the foundational issues related to case-based reasoning, describes some of the leading methodological approaches within the field, and exemplifies the current state through pointers to some systems. Initially, a general framework is defined, to which the subsequent descriptions and discussions will refer. The framework is influenced by recent methodologies for knowledge level descriptions of intelligent systems. The methods for case retrieval, reuse, solution testing, and learning are summarized, and their actual realization is discussed in the light of a few example systems that represent different CBR approaches. In this paper, we demonstrate that the tamper proofing of PEDs is unsatisfactory, as is the certification process. We have implemented practical low-cost attacks on two certified, widely-deployed PEDs -- the Ingenico i3300 and the Dione Xtreme. By tapping inadequately protected smartcard communications, an attacker with basic technical skills can expose card details and PINs, leaving cardholders open to fraud. We analyze the anti-tampering mechanisms of the two PEDs and show that, while the specific protection measures mostly work as intended, critical vulnerabilities arise because of the poor integration of cryptographic, physical and procedural protection. As these vulnerabilities illustrate a systematic failure in the design process, we propose a methodology for doing it better in the future. These failures also demonstrate a serious problem with the Common Criteria. So we discuss the incentive structures of the certification process, and show how they can lead to problems of the kind we identified. Finally, we recommend changes to the Common Criteria framework in light of the lessons learned. Our approach combines content analysis based on text tags and image data with structural analysis based on geospatial data. We use the spatial distribution of where people take photos to define a relational structure between the photos that are taken at popular places. We then study the interplay between this structure and the content, using classification methods for predicting such locations from visual, textual and temporal features of the photos. We find that visual and temporal features improve the ability to estimate the location of a photo, compared to using just textual features. With the initiative of Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), web-services turn out in practice to enable a widely spread realization of SOA. <p>With these technological achievements, new management tasks are arising in information systems science. As information systems are increasingly interlinked with other systems by various service providers, it is important to choose the appropriate composition of a corporate service portfolio. For this purpose, the long-term economic consequences of out-tasking decisions have to be taken into account. We suggest a methodological framework for efficiency calculations that intends to suit for a proper evaluation of these consequences. Due to the long-term consequences of information systems design, methods of capital budgeting are applied in the framework. Using Financial Plans (VOFI), all payments driven by a decision can be taken into account, including various conditions for funding and loaning as well as taxes. We apply this method by analyzing typical in- and out-payments driven by outtasking decisions that have to be taken into account throughout the life-cycle of serviceoriented information systems. </p>For evaluation purposes, efficiency measures need to be calculated. These measures indicate which composition of the service portfolio is most profitable in a certain corporate situation. We will demonstrate how to calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) as well as the Return on Investment (ROI) of a Service Portfolio on the basis of capital budgeting. BPEL4WS allows for a mixture of block structured and graph structured process models thus making the language expressive at the price of being complex. Although BPEL4WS is not such a bad proposal by itself, it is remarkable how much attention this standard receives while the more fundamental issues and problems such as semantics, expressiveness, and adequacy do not get the attention they deserve. Having a standard is a very good idea. However, there are too many of them and most of them die before becoming mature. A simple indicator of this development is the increasing length of acronyms: PDL, XPDL, BPSS, EDOC, BPML, WSDL, WSCI, ebXML, and BPEL4WS are just some of the acronyms referring to various standards in the domain. Another problem is that these languages typically have no clearly defined semantics. In this presentation, we analyze the requirements for the support of business processes and put these in the context of existing SOC technology. We describe an application of SOC technology providing dedicated support for dynamic business process management across the boundaries of (autonomous) organizations.
