Subject Matter

Though information technologies play a central role nearly everywhere in industry today, the capabilities to capture semantics of information is still restricted. Many IT applications in industry (like CAD, PDM, CAE, Workflow, CSCW etc.) do not have an explicit semantics representation. The intended meaning is guaranteed by complex hand-coded procedures. The World Wide Web as one of the most successful and influential developments just started to move towards a Semantic Web. Semantic Web technologies will play a central role in upcoming industrial IT systems and applications. In the lectures and seminars we will describe requirements to engineering and enterprise ontologies and their usage, discuss scenarios how they realistically can contribute in upcoming semantic based engineering and industrial processes, and investigate how Semantic Web Technologies and Ontologies can contribute to Advanced Knowledge Management in industrial environments.
