On Tuesday 8th November, as part of Irish Open Data Week, DERI will host Opening Up Government Data. The goal of this free event is to show the benefits of Open Data to public authorities, businesses, organisations and citizens through open, facilitated discussions and hands-on sessions.

The Open Data movement is a global initiative, with the goal to motivate governments to make public information freely available and easily accessible online. Examples include data.gov, the Open Data website of the United States, and data.gov.uk, the Open Data website of the UK. Today, more than 140 regions and countries are publishing their data online, with Fingal County Council hosting the only official Irish Open Data website at data.fingal.ie.

We are delighted to announce that the Deputy Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr. Ollie Crowe, will officially launch the event.

Detailed Agenda

Introduction to Open Data

Deirdre Lee        eGovernment researcher, DERI, NUI Galway

To kick things off we will provide a general overview of Open Data and its benefits, as well as the progress of the Open Data movement, both nationally and internationally.

Showcase of existing Open Data applications

Michael Hausenblas        Linked Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway

A showcase of a wide variety of applications that have been built using Open Data.

Overview of Open Data datasets

Fadi Maali        eGovernment Open Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway

Which datasets are most useful? Which the easiest to publish? Find out what are the most common Open Data datasets available.

Open Data expert panel

Tim McCarthy        GeoInformatics Research Coordinator, NUI Maynooth
Deirdre Ni Raghallaigh        Senior Executive Officer, Dublin City Council

Tim McCarthy and Deirdre Ni Raghallaigh share their experiences of releasing Open Data in Ireland and will answer questions from participants.

Open Data helpdesk

During lunch, DERI technical experts will be on-hand to answer any specific Open Data questions that you may have.

Open Data Getting Started

These practical sessions aim to show the participants how to get started with Open Data in a simple, straight-forward way. We will demonstrate the available technologies and highlight the existing support mechanisms.

How to publish Open Data

Richard Cyganiak        Linked Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway
Sarven Capadisli        Linked Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway

We have devised an iterative approach for Irish public authorities to begin publishing their data online; from minimum-effort actions to identify potential datasets, to more expressive actions to describe and publish datasets online.

How to consume Open Data

Aftab Iqbal Linked        Linked Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway
Gofran Shukair        eGovernment Open Data researcher, DERI, NUI Galway
Lin Clark        Linked Data & Drupal researcher, DERI, NUI Galway

Once public authorities publish Open Data, developers can build innovative applications that add value to the original data. We will demonstrate what technologies are available for utilising Open Data. Linked Open Data refers to data that has been described in such a way that inherent relationships between datasets exist.

Round-table Discussions

The round-table discussions aim to provide facilitated platforms for participants to discuss any Open Data queries they may have. Participants can share knowledge and experiences, under the guidance of our expert facilitators. The discussion topics will be directed by the participants.
