About

The Annual ICT Dissertation Award aims to make more visible the significant scientific contribution made by Ireland - in particular by post-graduate students - to Information and Communication Technology.  This award also aims at initiating knowledge transfer from the Universities and Institutes of Technology into society and the economy.

As some of the largest research efforts in ICT in Ireland, this thesis award is organised and sponsored by the Science Foundation Ireland funded Centres for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSETs) in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector (DERI, CLARITY, CTVR, CNGL, and Lero) in association with the Royal Irish Academy.

The award is combined with a cash prize of 1500 EURO, sponsored by the CSETs.

Entry criteria

Any dissertation is eligible which has been submitted for a doctorate in the Island of Ireland in what is commonly understood as ICT (Computer Science and computer based Information and Communication Technology). There is a limit of THREE dissertations per year per University or Institute of Technology.

To be considered, a dissertation should:

1.      make a noteworthy contribution to the subject;

2.      reach a high standard of exposition;

3.      result in publication(s) in reputable publication venues;

4.      place its results clearly in the context of ICT as a whole; and

5.      enable a computer scientist or electrical engineer with significantly different interests to grasp its essentials.

The competition period for 2011 is from 1 January 2010 until the closing date. A dissertation cannot be submitted more than once. It is reasonable to submit a thesis to the scheme if it has all of the above qualities in good measure, and if it is comparable in standard with the top 10 per cent of dissertations in the subject.

Please direct further questions about entry criteria to: Professor Stefan Decker, DERI, NUI Galway (Email:  stefan.decker@deri.org)

How to enter

2.     An up-to 10 page essay summarising  the thesis work and place it in perspective relative to current research in the ICT area, including outlining the significance of publication(s) derived from the dissertation. It should be written with an academic reader in mind.

3.     A justification, of about 300 words, by one of the examiners - preferably the external - explaining the dissertation's claim to distinction (against the criteria listed above);

4.     The name of the primary supervisor and the research group, school/department, and project or CSET within the research organisation to which the student was primarily affiliated;

5.     An assurance that within the competition period the examiners have recommended to the author's institution that the doctorate should be awarded; and

6.     A CV including publication list of the thesis author

Submissions may be made online via http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=DISICTRIA2011
